Boeing Business Jets announces four new BBJ MAX 8 orders

Boeing Business Jets yesterday announced orders for four new BBJ MAX 8 airplanes at the National Business Aviation Association Convention and Exhibition in Las Vegas. The first order to an undisclosed customer based in the Middle East is for three BBJ MAX 8s. The second order for an undisclosed customer in Asia is for one BBJ MAX 8.

“2015 has been a really strong year for Boeing Business Jets. We have sold seven aircraft and we are not done yet,” said David Longridge, president, Boeing Business Jets. “The BBJ MAX is doing really well with nine orders already on the books for both BBJ MAX 8s and BBJ MAX 9s. The 737 MAX program is on track for first flight scheduled in early 2016. We know the MAX will be a great airplane for our VIP customers.”

In addition to a strong backlog, 2015 has been a successful year for green deliveries and completed aircraft entering into service. Boeing Business Jets will end the year with 11 green aircraft deliveries to completion centers.

Seven completed airplanes entered into service this year; four BBJs and three BBJ 747-8s. Additionally, the first BBJ completed by Sabena Technics, managed by Boeing Business Jets as a turnkey airplane, will enter into service.

“Boeing Business Jets and Sabena technics worked together to develop a great product. As a turnkey airplane, BBJ managed the completion process and worked with Sabena technics directly and the outcome was fantastic. By the end of the year we will deliver the airplane to a very happy customer ahead of schedule, under budget and with a cabin substantially lighter than contracted, allowing better performance and further range of operations,” said Longridge.

Boeing Business Jets offers a wide variety of ultra-large-cabin, long-range airplanes perfectly suited for the private jet market. The product line includes high-performance derivatives of the commercially successful 737NG, 737 MAX, 787, 777 and 747-8 programs.

Customers have ordered 235 Boeing Business Jets and 213 aircraft have delivered since 1996 when BBJ was formed.

Gulfstream G550 sets new speed record

The Gulfstream G550 arrived for this year’s National Business Aviation Association Convention & Exhibition after setting a new speed record between Macau and Las Vegas.

The G550 departed Macau International Airport for McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas on Nov. 14, 2015. The 6,586 nautical-mile/12,197-kilometer trip was covered in 12 hours and 8 minutes at an average speed of Mach 0.80.

“The Gulfstream G550 continues to impress with its outstanding capabilities,” said Scott Neal, senior vice president, Worldwide Sales and Marketing, Gulfstream. “The G550 can fly farther than any other aircraft in its class, enabling operators to reach more destinations nonstop. This latest speed record proves once again that the G550 ensures that passengers reach their destinations in record time.”

Pending approval by the U.S. National Aeronautic Association, this latest city-pair record for the G550 will be sent to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in Switzerland for consideration as a world record.

The Gulfstream G550 can fly up to 51,000 feet/15,545 meters and at speeds up to Mach 0.885. Powered by two Rolls-Royce BR710 engines, the G550 can fly eight passengers and four crew 6,750 nautical miles/12,501 kilometers at Mach 0.80. The fully equipped G550 offers a choice of cabin layouts and options and can accommodate up to 18 passengers.

The G550 also features the PlaneViewTM cockpit with Gulfstream’s signature Cursor Control Devices. The G550’s advanced vision equipment includes the Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System and the optional Synthetic Vision-Primary Flight Display.

The G550 flight deck launched Gulfstream PlaneConnectTM, an advanced system that automatically transmits reports on the aircraft’s condition to maintenance experts on the ground, facilitating a quick resolution of any possible issues.

A technological leader from the start, the G550 was designed to incorporate future technology upgrades. Gulfstream has continuously invested in the G550, ensuring it meets the latest operational mandates with standard Future Air Navigation System Controller-Pilot Datalink Communication and Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast.

There are more than 500 G550 aircraft in service around the world.

Gulfstream reveals upgraded G600 cabin mock-up

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. yesterday revealed a redesigned full-size Gulfstream G600 mock-up that maximizes space, convenience, comfort and capabilities. The unveiling took place at the National Business Aviation Association’s Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition. Visitors at the convention will be able to experience firsthand the tremendous comfort and productivity of the G600 cabin.

The improvements to the mock-up are the result of extensive customer feedback received over the past 12 months. The redesigned mock-up features:

  • a slimmer passenger service unit for increased headroom and maximized passenger space
  • an expanded side ledge
  • additional counter space in the galley
  • an ergonomically enhanced aft lavatory
  • enhanced cabin lighting
  • quieter drawer and cabinet latches
  • an improved seat for enhanced comfort and ease of use
  • stone flooring in the entry way and forward lavatory

“We have collaborated with our customers throughout this project,” said Tray Crow, director, Interior Design, Gulfstream. “Since unveiling the original G600 mock-up at the G500 and G600 announcement event in October 2014, we have been gathering feedback from customers to ensure we meet their needs and deliver an ideal in-flight environment. The interior is so comfortable and functional that passengers will forget they are travelling near the speed of sound.”

The G600 is the longest cabin in its class and can be configured for up to four living areas. The cabin allows for passengers to stay connected through satellite communications and high-speed Internet, hold important business meetings, enjoy a nice dinner, relax or sleep. The cabin management system has been improved, allowing passengers to control the lighting, window shades, temperature and entertainment amenities through touchscreen devices.

The cabin is also designed to allow passengers to feel refreshed when they arrive at their destination, with quiet cabin sound levels, 100 percent fresh air replenished every two minutes and 14 Gulfstream panoramic windows that allow an abundance of natural light to fill the cabin. The G600 will also have the best pressurization system in its class with a cabin altitude during cruise that will vary from 3,670 feet/1,119 meters at FL430 to a maximum of 4,850 ft/1,478 m at FL510.

The G600 mock-up also includes the Gulfstream Symmetry Flight Deck™. It is the most advanced flight deck in business aviation and features active control sidesticks, integrated touchscreen controllers, next-generation enhanced vision system, and Honeywell Primus Epic avionics.

Certification of the G500 is anticipated in 2017, with entry into service in 2018. The G600 certification is slated to follow in 2018, with entry into service in 2019.

Gulfstream G500 makes NBAA debut

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.’s all-new GulfstreamG500 made its first cross-country trip for the 2015 National Business Aviation Association’s Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA2015). The flight test aircraft arrived at Henderson Executive Airport on Nov. 13 to join the G650ER, G550, G450, G280 andG150 in Gulfstream’s static display.

The G500 flew from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport into 75-knot headwinds and arrived at Henderson Executive 4 hours and 36 minutes later, accomplishing the 1,630-nautical-mile/3,018-kilometer flight at an average speed of Mach 0.85 and altitude of 45,000 feet/13,716 meters. Gulfstream test pilots Scott Martin and Scott Evans were at the controls, with Flight Test engineers Paul Ludlow and Nathaniel Rutland providing on-board support.

“Delivering on our promises is a tradition at Gulfstream, and we look forward to doing the same with our new generation of aircraft, the G500 and G600,” said Dan Nale, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “The robust testing we accomplished on the ground and in the air since announcing the aircraft helped make this achievement possible. We are proud to give customers, the business aviation industry and the public a chance to see the G500 in person at NBAA.”

The G500 flew to Las Vegas with a significant amount of flight testing equipment on board:

  • a noseboom, which provides air data, angle-of-attack and angle-of-sideslip information to the pilots and engineers
  • Attitude Recovery System (ARS) safety equipment for high-speed flutter testing and low-speed stall testing
  • data-monitoring system that provides real-time data for engineers on board and in the telemetry room
  • a video recording system that captures touchscreen commands and flight-deck footage as well as external footage of the landing gear, trailing cone and ARS
  • flutter vanes on the wing and horizontal tips

The first G500 test aircraft, T1, is focused on flight performance and controls and has achieved a number of flight-test milestones since its first flight on May 18. The aircraft has flown more than 160 hours, completed 44 flights and reached an altitude exceeding 50,000 ft/15,240 m. Its longest flight was 5 hours and 22 minutes. T1 has reached a top speed of Mach 0.995. Flutter and envelope expansion testing are in progress, and initial testing of the aircraft’s handling qualities and the high-speed and recovery stall system have also taken place.

In total, the G500 flight-test program consists of five aircraft, including a fully outfitted production aircraft that allows the company to test all the interior elements and complete integration of the aircraft systems with the passenger experience. T2 and T3 have been delivered to the Flight Test facility and are preparing for first flight.

Gulfstream anticipates certification of the G500 in 2017, with entry into service in 2018. Lab testing for the G600 is ongoing in Gulfstream’s integration test facility, with certification slated for 2018 and entry into service in 2019.

The G500 can fly 5,000 nautical miles/9,260 kilometers at Mach 0.85 or 3,800 nm/7,038 km at Mach 0.90, while the G600 can carry passengers 6,200 nm/11,482 km at Mach 0.85 and 4,800 nm/8,890 km at Mach 0.90. The maximum operating speed for both aircraft is Mach 0.925, the same maximum speed as Gulfstream’s G650 and G650ER.

Modular Fly Away Kit for VVIP and Special Missions

Lufthansa Technik is introducing a new product, the Fly Away Kit, to the VVIP and Special Mission market. The Fly Away Kit is integrated in a modified LD9 Unit Load Device (ULD) and ensures the availability of important spare parts for aircraft operations by stowing them right on board.

For example, wheels, a mobile aircraft jack, essential spare parts or oil can be stored. Easily accessible in the aircraft’s cargo bay, technicians have the equipment, where it is needed. Based on the shadow-board principle like a toolbox, the VIP style Fly Away Kit is clearly organized.

Designed by Lufthansa Technik’s VIP & Executive Jet Solutions division the new product has already been ordered by a VVIP customer operating an Airbus 340 in Head of state configuration.

Walter Heerdt, Luftansa Technik’s Senior Vice President VIP & Executive Jet Solutions, said: “This new product gives our customers the independence to go to any remote airfield with a good feeling having the essential spares on-board. Especially in combination with our Mobile Aircraft Support teams or on-board technicians we can maximize the dispatched reliability for VIP operations.”

Building on Lufthansa Technik’s unique component support experience, the Fly Away Kit can be tailored for each customer’s specific needs, operation and mission. For example, the new Patient Transport Unit Next Generation (PTU NG) can be safely stowed in the ULD along with other emergency medical equipment. Special mission operators get the flexibility to store all the required equipment in this customizable standard container.

For the first time Lufthansa Technik  presents a 1:6 model of the Fly Away Kit and the on-board stowage solution of the Patient Transport Unit Next Generation (PTU NG) as one example of nearly endless stowage solutions at its booth (no.2289) at the NBAA Convention 2014 in Orlando, Florida, USA.

The modular concept of the on-board stowage solution allows individual stowages for every need and container type independent of wide- or narrowbody aircrafts. The size of a standard LD9 container is 1.6 m high, 3.2 m wide and 2.2 m deep.

Bombardier Introduces Challenger 650 with Launch Customer NetJets at NBAA 2014

Bombardier announced today it has expanded its leading Challenger family of business jets with the addition of the new Challenger 650 aircraft. In partnership with NetJets, the global launch customer for the aircraft, the Challenger 650 jet was introduced at the National Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition (NBAA) in Orlando, Florida during a special unveiling event.

On June 11, 2012, NetJets placed a firm order for 25 Challenger 650 jets, formerly referred to as theChallenger 605 “NG”, with options for 50 additional aircraft. The Signature Series brand of the Challenger 650 aircraft has been designed with unique features such as customized cabinetry, seating, next-generation In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) and lighting. Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled to begin in 2015.

“The Challenger 650 jet enhances our leading business aircraft portfolio, the largest within the industry and will establish new standards in its segment,” said Éric Martel, President, Bombardier Business Aircraft. “This aircraft will provide our customers with the ultimate in-flight experience, a superior baseline offering and the lowest direct operating costs* in its class. Airbus ACJ319 highlights trend to larger cabins at NBAA

All of the business jet variants launched in recent years feature larger cabins than their predecessors, highlighting the market’s wish for more cabin. Airbus will be highlighting its leadership of this trend by displaying an Airbus ACJ319, with the widest and tallest cabin of any business jet, at the NBAA show.

The Airbus ACJ319 on display is operated by Tyrolean Jet Services and is offered for VVIP charter. It features lounge areas at the front, a bedroom with ensuite bathroom and shower in the middle, and business-class seating in the rear, and is certificated for 19 passengers.

“More space in the cabin is desirable for many reasons other than the greater comfort and freedom of movement that it brings,” explains Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers, John Leahy. “The larger cabin volume and floor-area of Airbus corporate jets means you can take more people with you when you travel, be more productive along the way, and carry more baggage,” he adds.

The desire for a large cabin is one of the findings of Airbus’ ACJ Billionaire Study, announced earlier this year, which highlighted the wish of high net-worth individuals to take with them when they travel, those that look after them at work and at home.

Airbus’ ACJ318, ACJ319, ACJ320 and ACJ321 fit into the same sort of ramp space as traditional business jets, but their cabins are almost twice as large, offering a very different travel experience, in which people can socialise more easily by moving around the cabin.
