Fanhansa Siegerflieger goes into extra time

The high point after the victory in the final at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Stadium last month came 36 hours later, when the Siegerflieger – a Boeing 747-8 – flew over the German capital’s fan park 700 metres above the ground, with 500,000 fans cheering on. Alongside the Fanhansa lettering, the jumbo jet, which is named after the state capital Potsdam, will also express the thanks of Lufthansa and of all fans to the German team for the brilliant performance in Brazil.

‘Our Siegerflieger made such an incredible splash. We’re still getting mails, tweets and Facebook messages every day, so we’ve decided that the Siegerflieger will continue flying until the 2016 European Football Championship and serve as motivation for Jogi’s boys for the next title’, said Alexander Schlaubitz, Head of Marketing Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

The “Yankee India” (derived from the D-ABYI registration) was privy to a special honour immediately after the final in Rio de Janeiro. Additional gold letters were added to the already unusual “Fanhansa” livery: Siegerflieger, or “winners’ plane” in English.

On Twitter, the #siegerflieger hashtag became one of the most used terms on the internet. More than 16,000 re-tweets set a new record for Lufthansa’s congratulations on the World Cup title. With over 38 million social media contacts, there have never been a greater number of fans following the Fanhansa campaign launched back in May. More than 100 million people were also reached via television and print media.

With Fanhansa, Lufthansa has flown not just the German national team to Brazil, as partner of the German Football Association, but also tens of thousands of football fans, media representatives and officials. For the first time since flight operations began nearly 60 years ago, part of the fleet has changed the name on the aircraft fuselage. To mark the football World Cup, a total of eight aircraft had their traditional Lufthansa livery replaced with the Fanhansa logo. The Fanhansa label will be removed from the remaining seven aircraft over the coming weeks.

As asas redesenhadas e novos winglets melhoraram a aerodinâmica e, assim, economizam combustível.

Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental lands for the first time in Rio de Janeiro

Deutsche Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental.

Deutsche Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental.

Last Friday’s evening, for the first time a Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental landed in Rio de Janeiro. The aircraft with registration D-ABYI of Lufthansa operated an extra flight (LH 502), which took off from Frankfurt at 11:26 AM CEST and landed in Rio de Janeiro at 05:29 PM BRT.

As the world’s longest passenger aircraft, the Lufthansa Boeing 747-8I is around 5,6 meters longer than the Boeing 747-400. The 76,3 meter-long fuselage of the 19,4 metre-high Jumbo comfortably seats 362 passengers. The new Jumbo slots in perfectly between the Boeing 747-400 and the Airbus A380 and thus constitutes an important link in the modern airline fleet – one that guarantees efficient operations on long-haul routes.

But that is not all. New aluminium alloys and composite materials, which are lighter in weight and more durable than the materials previously used in aircraft construction, were incorporated into the 747-8. The redesigned wings with their state-of-the art profile and raked wingtips improve aerodynamics and thus save fuel. To put it in numbers: the 747-8 is 15 per cent more fuel efficient than its predecessor model, the 747-400, which translates to 15 per cent less CO2. Altogether, in terms of its capacity, range and operating costs, the new jumbo is a very economical aircraft. Customers will also be thrilled to discover a host of innovations aboard the 747-8. In Business Class, for example, Lufthansa invites its passengers to enjoy the comforts of the completely redesigned cabin.

The special sticker was applied during the weekend. On yesterday’s evening, the Boeing 747-8I took off with the German national football team to Berlin.

The airline was the launch customer of the airplane. In this moment the company has fourteen Boeing 747-8I in operation and is waiting five more “Queen of the Skies”. So far, just Lufthansa operates the passenger version of this aircraft.

The 747-8, which entered service with Lufthansa on 1 June 2012, incorporates countless innovations that are designed to make flying even more environmentally compatible and, above all, quieter.

Lufthansa is celebrating a special premiere with Fanhansa. For the first time since beginning flight operations nearly 60 years ago, part of the fleet is to change the name on the aircraft fuselage. To mark the football World Cup, a total of eight Lufthansa aircraft will swap their familiar livery for the new Fanhansa logo.

Every day, the airline offers three flights between Brazil and Europe. Two flights departing from Sao Paulo, one to Frankfurt and other to Munich, and a third from Rio de Janeiro to Frankfurt. From the two hubs of Lufthansa – Frankfurt and Munich – the airline has connections across the whole Europe, Asia and the Middle East. At exactly 10.07 p.m., the Fanhansa Airbus A340-600 of Lufthansa took off from Runway 25C at Frankfurt Airport with the German national team on board as it heads for Salvador da Bahia. The aircraft went off-blocks at 9:57 p.m. Special flight LH 2014 hosts the national players, trainers and assistants of the German Football Association (DFB) as well as the delegation management and numerous media representatives. With Captain Eric Bos and Thomas Holland and Senior First Officer Oliver Dietrich in the cockpit, the jet will reach the north-eastern coast of Brazil after a flight time of 10 hours and 40 minutes. The German team will play its first match against Portugal in the country’s third-largest city on 16 June.

“The best football team is flying to the World Cup in Brazil today with the “airline for sport” and will enjoy the best 5-star experience. We are proud of our long-standing partnership with the German Football Association (DFB),” said Jens Bischof, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa German Airlines, at the send-off for the team in the airport’s Lufthansa First Class Terminal. “Everyone at Lufthansa will be rooting for the German national team and we will hopefully be scheduling one of our flagships for the return flight from Rio de Janeiro on 13 July after a victory in the final”.

Oliver Bierhoff, manager of the German national football team, said “It is a long-standing tradition that our partner, Lufthansa, flies the German national team to the host country for large tournaments. Flights with Lufthansa have been the start of successful trips for the national team a number of times. We have always felt very comfortable on board, have been well taken care of and in the best of hands. And that’s how it will be again for the flight to Brazil.”

The Airbus A340-600 with registration D-AIHQ has already been fitted with the new Business Class, which provides outstanding comfort when lying and sitting. At the push of a button, seats can be converted into comfortable, fully flat beds measuring 1.98 metres in length. Passengers can also enjoy the enhanced individualised entertainment programme on 15-inch screens.

The long-haul aircraft, which is abbreviated as “Hotel-Quebec” for everyday flight operations, has eight seats in First Class, 56 seats in Business Class and 229 seats in Economy Class. The Airbus went into service in January 2007 and is one of eight Lufthansa aircraft to have swapped its familiar livery for the new “Fanhansa” logo. It means that Lufthansa has temporarily changed its name on the fuselage of some of its aircraft for the first time since commencing operations almost 60 years ago.

The in-flight service for the night flight will be similar to the Lufthansa Business Class service offered on South American routes. For the months of May and June, the menu of creative dishes on intercontinental flights from Germany has been put together by Holger Stromberg. The chef and culinary head of the German national football team since 2007 designed the menu in line with his “soul kitchen” credo.

As a starter, the players and German Football Association (DFB) passengers can choose between marinated Black Angus beef fillet with bean salad and honey au gratin Picandou (mild goat’s cheese). For the main course, veal fillet with fresh asparagus or vegetarian rigatoni in a pineapple curry broth will be served. And for afters, a selection of cheeses, rice pudding with raspberry-rhubarb compote and fresh fruit are on the menu. An extensive brunch range will be available before landing.

Lufthansa is the official carrier of the German Football Association (DFB) and, as the “airline for sport”, is involved in numerous popular sports. As well as its long-standing partnership with the German Football Association (since 2005), Lufthansa also works with FC Bayern Munich (since 2004) and Eintracht Frankfurt (since 2008). In addition, the airline is a national sponsor of the Deutsche Sporthilfe foundation and has been a partner of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) for many years. This has traditionally involved transporting the German teams to the Olympics and, as a partner of the National Paralympic Committee Germany (DBS), to the Paralympics.
