Air France inaugurates its Boeing 787’s first commercial flight to Cairo

On 9 January 2017, Air France inaugurated its Boeing 787’s first commercial flight to Cairo. Customers can now travel to Cairo on board this innovative new aircraft up to 6 times a week. Equipped with the latest new travel cabins, the Boeing 787 has 30 seats in Business, 21 in Premium Economy and 225 in Economy.

Melbourne – Los Angeles announced as first Dreamliner route

The Qantas Dreamliner will carry 236 passengers in a three-class configuration and complement the daily Airbus A380 service already flying from Melbourne to Los Angeles. Operating six times per week, the Dreamliner will replace the 747 service that currently operates on this route alongside the A380.

Qantas International CEO Gareth Evans said the arrival of the Dreamliner would be a step change for the airline and for customers, both in terms of operational efficiency and passenger comfort.

“The Dreamliner is a game-changing aircraft that opens up a new era for Qantas, and it’s been designed with passenger comfort in mind,” said Mr Evans.

“The aircraft itself offers passengers larger windows, a smoother ride and better air quality to reduce jetlag.

“In Economy there’s more room and plenty of storage. In Business, our suites will offer a fully flat bed and direct aisle access. We’ll be unveiling our Premium Economy in the first quarter of next year and it will set new standards for the industry.”

Mr Evans made the announcement while visiting the Boeing Aerostructures Australia facility at Port Melbourne with Victorian Tourism Minister John Eren. The factory manufactures parts of the 787 wing, which are then shipped to the United States for the aircraft assembly.

“We’ll be working with Visit Victoria on joint marketing campaigns to highlight what Victoria and the Qantas Dreamliner have to offer,” said Mr Evans.

Today’s announcement (December 13th, 2016) follows Qantas confirming it will fly non-stop from Perth to London from March 2018. Travellers on the East Coast are expected to also use the service, cutting up to an hour off their total travel time.

The 787-9 Melbourne-Los Angeles service will operate six days a week. This takes the total number of Qantas services on the route from nine to 13 return flights per week and will give customers the convenience of a morning or afternoon departure from Melbourne on most days. As it replaces a larger, 364-seat 747 that operates twice a week, the net capacity increase is approximately 1,400 seats in total.

Fares will be on sale from Christmas Day 2016.

Qantas to fly non-stop Perth to London

Qantas is set to add to its list of aviation firsts, with the national carrier confirming it will operate non-stop flights from Perth to London using the 787-9 Dreamliner.

The 14,498 kilometre service will be the first regular passenger service to directly link Australia with Europe when it begins in March 2018.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the history-making route would be a watershed for travel, tourism and trade.

“When Qantas created the Kangaroo Route to London in 1947, it took four days and nine stops. Now it will take just 17 hours from Perth non-stop.

“This is a game-changing route flown by a game-changing aircraft. Australians have never had a direct link to Europe before, so the opportunities this opens up are huge.

“It’s great news for travellers because it will make it easier to get to London. It’s great news for Western Australia because it will bring jobs and tourism. And it’s great news for the nation, because it will bring us closer to one of our biggest trade partners and sources of visitors.”

Mr Joyce said passenger comfort on the long flight was a key consideration.

“When we designed the interior of our 787s, we wanted to make sure passengers would be comfortable on the extended missions the aircraft was capable of.

“That’s why we have features in our Economy seats that other airlines reserve for Premium Economy. Our Business Suite has been nicknamed ‘mini First class’ by many of our frequent flyers. And we’re redesigning our on-board service to help reduce jetlag,” he added.

The enhanced Qantas cabin design is in addition to the comfort factors that Boeing built in to the Dreamliner – improved air quality, lower cabin noise and technology to reduce turbulence.

Mr Joyce said the direct route is expected to appeal to travellers on the East Coast as well as West Australians, helping to deliver a tourism boost.

“A direct flight makes travelling to Australia a much more attractive proposition to millions of people. We expect many travellers from Europe will start their time in Australia with a visit to Perth before going on to see other parts of the country.

“Our modelling shows that people from the East Coast as well as South Australia would fly domestically to Perth to connect to our non-stop London service. Some will take the opportunity to break their journey, whether it’s for business meetings in Perth, to holiday or to visit family.”

The new flight will operate through Qantas’ existing domestic terminals (T3/4), which will be upgraded to accommodate international flights. The airline’s current international services from Perth (to Singapore and to Auckland) will also move to this terminal, helping to simplify the journey for thousands of people every year. Qantas will move its operations to an expanded Terminal 1 at Perth Airport by 2025, pending a commercial agreement.

“We’ll be looking at the timing of our domestic flights through Perth to offer the best connections we can to our international flights, particularly given they will all be under the one roof,” added Mr Joyce.

“I’d like to acknowledge the support of the West Australian Government and Perth Airport in helping make this service a reality.”

Seats on the Perth-London flights will go on sale in April 2017 for the first services in March 2018. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners used on the route will carry 236 passengers across Business, Premium Economy and Economy cabins.

Boeing begins final assembly on first 787-10 Dreamliner

Boeing teammates in North Charleston, S.C., started final assembly of the first 787-10 Dreamliner, marking yet another on-time milestone for the development program.

The first 787-10 will cycle through Boeing South Carolina’s Final Assembly facility as all major sections are joined, interior and exterior components completed, power turned on and production tests begin.

“As we enter the next phase of the 787-10’s development, we eagerly watch our first airplane come to life,” said Ken Sanger, vice president and general manager, 787 Airplane Development, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “This is the result of years of preparation and solid performance by our Boeing teammates and supplier partners. This achievement is another example that demonstrates Boeing’s ability to develop great airplanes in a disciplined fashion in order to meet our customer commitments.”

The first 787-10 is expected to fly in 2017 and first delivery is scheduled for 2018.

The 787-10 is the third member of the super-efficient, passenger-pleasing 787 Dreamliner family. As a stretch of the 787-9, the 787-10 will retain 95 percent commonality while adding seats and cargo capacity, setting a new benchmark for fuel efficiency and operating economics – 25 percent better fuel per seat and emissions than the airplanes it will replace.

To date, Boeing has received 154 787-10 orders from nine customers.

Air France welcomes its first Boeing 787

At 9 am on Friday 2 December, Air France welcomed its very first Boeing 787. On this occasion, and as is our custom, firefighters at Paris-Charles de Gaulle gave the aircraft the traditional water salute.

Franck Terner, Air France CEO stated: “It is with great pride and honour today that Air France takes delivery of its first Boeing 787, the 9th in the Air France-KLM Group. The Boeing 787 marks a new step in the modernization of our fleet and will offer our customers the best Air France products”.

On board the Boeing 787 – the best of Air France

For Air France customers, the Boeing 787 has many assets –

Many operational assets

This new-generation aircraft has many operational assets including –

– fuel consumption reduced by about 20% compared with previous-generation aircraft, an asset that reduces the effects of a new increase in the price of fuel;

– a significant reduction in CO2 emissions (around 20%) and noise emissions.

Maintenance support by AFI KLM E&M

A major player on the aeronautical maintenance market, Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance (AFI KLM E&M) provides maintenance support for the Air France KLM Group’s Boeing 787 fleet.

AFI KLM E&M offers the most comprehensive technical support for airlines on the market, particularly for new-generation aircraft fleets, ranging from engineering and line maintenance to engine overhaul and aero structure support (high composite capability with the new Hélios facility at Paris-CDG), modification capability (design and production certification), APUs, training (innovative digital tools), etc.

A major player for 787 maintenance, AFI KLM E&M has successfully developed a maintenance capability for the GEnx-1B powerplant, making it the first MRO present on this market, excluding engine manufacturer. A first customer has already signed up with AFI KLM E&M: Xiamen Air (China). Air France and the Boeing 787: a series of discovery flights

Air France’s Boeing 787 will make its first commercial flight to Cairo on 9 January 2017.

The Company will take delivery of a second aircraft in April 2017, which will serve Montreal starting 1 May 2017.

Air Canada to launch Vancouver – Frankfurt and Vancouver – London Gatwick flights for Summer 2017

Air Canada today (November 9th, 2016) announced it is further boosting international flights at its Vancouver hub next summer with daily seasonal flights from YVR to Frankfurt, and three times weekly seasonal flights from YVR to London Gatwick. Flights begin June 1, 2017 and June 8, 2017 respectively, and tickets are now available for purchase.

“Air Canada continues to strategically increase its European flights at YVR with seasonal daily flights to Frankfurt next summer and three times weekly flights to London Gatwick,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada President, Passenger Airlines. “The addition of our flights to Frankfurt, one of Europe’s most important hubs, offers customers a wide array of convenient choices and the ease of one-stop connections with our Star Alliance partner Lufthansa when travelling to southern, central and eastern Europe as well as Africa, the Middle East and beyond.

“We will be the only airline flying non-stop between YVR and the two largest airports in the London metropolitan region during the peak summer travel period with the addition of London Gatwick. Air Canada’s Dreamliners also feature an enhanced seatback In-Flight Entertainment system which is available at every seat throughout the aircraft. All Air Canada flights provide for Aeroplan accumulation and redemption and, for eligible customers, priority check-in, Maple Leaf Lounge access in Vancouver and in Frankfurt, priority boarding and other benefits. Air Canada’s Frankfurt flights complement daily flights operated from Vancouver by Star Alliance partner Lufthansa.

Next summer, Air Canada Rouge will operate to London Gatwick from two points across Canada:  Vancouver and Toronto.

Air Canada’s ongoing international expansion this year has included the recent launch of VancouverDelhi, VancouverBrisbane, VancouverDublin, TorontoSeoul, Toronto-London Gatwick, TorontoPrague, TorontoBudapest, TorontoWarsaw, TorontoGlasgow, MontrealCasablanca and MontrealLyon.

Boeing, China Southern Airlines Finalize Order for 12 787-9 Dreamliners

Boeing and China Southern Airlines today (October 12th, 2016) finalized an order of 12 787-9 Dreamliners, valued at $3.2 billion at current list prices. The new order strengthens China Southern’s expanding long-haul fleet.

“The 787 Dreamliners have helped us to achieve initial success in implementing our internationalization strategy in the past few years and enabled us to make our operation and services more appealing to passengers,” said Tan Wangeng, CEO, China Southern Airlines. “The additional new 787-9s will further increase our capacity and services for our long-haul routes.”

China Southern Airlines, China’s launch customer of the 787, currently operates 10 787-8s. The airplanes have enabled the Guangzhou-based carrier to launch six new non-stop global routes, connecting Guangzhou to London and Rome in Europe, Vancouver in North America, as well as Perth, Auckland and Christchurch in the Oceania area.

“China Southern has been a long-standing Boeing customer and we truly appreciate their confidence in the 787,” said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president, Northeast Asia Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 787-9 will help the airline achieve a new level of efficiency and profitability.”

The 787-9 complements and extends the super-efficient 787 family. With the fuselage stretched by 6 meters (20 feet) over the 787-8, the 787-9 will fly more passengers and more cargo farther with the same exceptional environmental performance. Like the 787-8, the 787-9 brings the economics of large jets to the middle of the market, with 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than similarly sized airplanes.

The 787-9 leverages the visionary design of the 787-8, offering passenger-pleasing features such as large windows, large stow bins, modern LED lighting, higher humidity, a lower cabin altitude, cleaner air and a smoother ride.

China’s largest airline by fleet size, China Southern Airlines currently operates 700 aircraft, including Boeing 787, 777, 747, 757 and 737s. By 2020, the airline expects to have a fleet of 1,000 aircraft with passenger traffic surpassing 160 million annually.
