Lufthansa expands its long-haul network: New destinations from Munich and Frankfurt in summer 2018

Lufthansa expands its route network and will offer new intercontinental destinations from Frankfurt and Munich in summer 2018.

New from Frankfurt Hub:
San Diego (USA) is the second largest city in the U.S. state of California and eighth overall in the Unites States. The city is located in southwest California, close to the Mexican border. Due to the pleasant climate, San Diego is known as „America’s Finest City“ by its residents. The beaches and waves of the Pacific are particularly suitable for surfing. The city is also a hotspot for the biotech and telecommunications industry. Beginning in summer 2018, Lufthansa will offer five weekly San Diego flights from Frankfurt.

New from Munich Hub:
Likewise in summer 2018, Lufthansa will reintroduce the Singapore route into its flight schedule from Munich.  Five times a week, passengers will be able to fly from the Bavarian capital to the lively economic metropolis in Asia. At the same time, Lufthansa will offer more additional flights from Munich to Chicago, USA. Instead of seven times a week, Lufthansa will fly from Bavaria to the „Windy City“ ten times per week.

Good news for Airbus A380 Fans in Munich: Starting in summer 2018, Lufthansa will introduce the Airbus A380 in Munich on long-haul destinations to Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Beijing. For this reason, Lufthansa will transfer five of its 14 Airbus A380s from Frankfurt to Munich. As a result up to 500 new positions will be staffed in Bavaria.

“With the A380 we can offer our Munich customers a premium aircraft at a 5-Star Hub,“ said Harry Hohmeister, member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and responsible for  Hub Management. “In recent years, we have made great progress in steering our hubs. We harmonized and integrated processes and are now more flexible in utilizing our aircraft at different locations. Quality, efficiency and growth will always remain our top priority.”

Lufthansa is showing a clear sign for continued growth in Bavaria. Over the next two years, the Lufthansa long-haul fleet in Munich will be receiving two more aircraft.

Boeing, United Airlines announce order for 100 737 MAX 10s

Boeing and United Airlines today announced an agreement at the 2017 Paris Air Show to convert 100 of its current 737 MAX orders into 737 MAX 10s, becoming the largest single 737 MAX 10 customer in the world.

United also announced an order for four additional 777-300ER aircraft.

“The 737 MAX 10 will enable us to continue using larger and more efficient aircraft within our domestic network and better meet the needs of our customers today and into the future,” said Andrew Levy, United Airlines executive vice president and chief financial officer.

“The addition of this advanced aircraft to our fleet will enable us to continue to offer the state-of-the-art flying experience our customers expect when traveling with us,” said Gerry Laderman, United Airlines senior vice president of finance, procurement and treasurer.

United expects to begin taking delivery of the 737 MAX 10 in late 2020.

United has flown nearly every version of the 737 that Boeing has produced. The new 737 MAX 10 will add to that legacy, providing United with another in a long line of highly successful aircraft.

“We’re excited that our long partnership with United will extend far into the future,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Kevin McAllister. “The 737 MAX 10 will provide even more flexibility to United’s route schedule and will bring to their operation the best economics of any airplane in the single-aisle segment. We’re proud that United’s 777-300ER fleet continues to grow.”

United has now ordered a total of 18 777-300ERs and began taking delivery of the aircraft last year. The 777-300ERs feature the airline’s all-new United Polaris business class, featuring custom-designed, exclusive-to-United seats, an elevated dining experience, new custom bedding from Saks Fifth Avenue and new amenity kits.

Like all of Boeing’s 737 MAX models, the MAX 10 incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets, the Boeing Sky Interior, large flight deck displays, and other improvements to deliver superior efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market.

The 737 MAX is the fastest-selling airplane in Boeing history.

Boeing, Ryanair finalize order for 10 additional 737 MAXs

Boeing and Ryanair finalized an order today for 10 additional 737 MAXs at the 2017 Paris Air Show. The order is valued at more than $1.1 billion at current list prices.

The Irish low-cost carrier now has 110 unfilled orders with 100 options for the higher capacity 737 MAX 8, as well as 65 Next-Generation 737-800s.

“We are pleased to announce this purchase of 10 additional Boeing 737 ‘Gamechanger’ aircraft, on top of our existing firm order for 100 737 MAXs, with a further 100 options remaining,” said Ryanair’s Chief Operations Officer, Mick Hickey. “This all new MAX 737 aircraft has 8 more seats than our current 189 seat Boeing 737-800s and incorporates the latest technology engines and winglets which reduces fuel consumption and noise emissions, ensuring we remain Europe’s greenest, cleanest airline. Ryanair is proud to partner with Boeing and has operated an all-Boeing fleet since 1994.”

Ryanair is an all-Boeing operator and launched the higher capacity 737 MAX 8 in late 2014 with an order for 100 airplanes. The airplane will provide Ryanair with 197 seats, increasing revenue potential and providing airlines like Ryanair with up to 16 percent better fuel efficiency per seat than today’s most efficient single-aisle airplanes.

Ryanair carried 120 million passengers last year with 1,800 daily flights to more than 200 destinations. The Dublin based carrier is the largest 737-800 customer in the world and the largest Boeing operator in Europe. In March this year Ryanair took delivery of its 450th Next-Generation 737-800 and with today’s announcement has ordered a total of more than 640 airplanes from Boeing.

The 737 MAX family has been designed to offer customers exceptional performance, flexibility and efficiency, with lower per-seat costs and an extended range that will open up new destinations in the single-aisle market. The MAX 8 and 9 will be followed in 2019 by the smaller MAX 7 and higher capacity MAX 8. The MAX 10 will be introduced in the 2020 time frame.

The 737 MAX incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market.

Boeing launches larger capacity 737 MAX 10 at 2017 Paris Air Show

Boeing announced the launch of the 737 MAX 10 as the newest member of the 737 MAX family today (June 19th, 2017) at the 2017 Paris Air Show. The 737 MAX 10 will have the lowest seat-mile cost of any single-aisle airplane ever produced.

The airplane has gained wide market acceptance with more than 240 orders and commitments secured from more than 10 customers worldwide. Customers will be announcing order details throughout the week.

“The 737 MAX 10 extends the competitive advantage of the 737 MAX family and we’re honored that so many customers across the world have embraced the outstanding value it will bring to their fleets,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Kevin McAllister. “Airlines wanted a larger, better option in the large single-aisle segment with the operating advantages of the 737 MAX family. Adding the 737 MAX 10 gives our customers the most flexibility in the market, providing their fleets the range capability, fuel efficiency and unsurpassed reliability that the 737 MAX family is widely known for.”

The 737 MAX 10 continues the MAX family’s range advantage over competing models and will deliver five percent lower trip costs and five percent lower seat-mile costs.

Design changes for the 737 MAX 10 include a fuselage stretch of 66 inches compared to the 737 MAX 9 and levered main landing gear. The airplane has the capacity to carry up to 230 passengers.

Other changes include a variable exit limit rating mid-exit door, a lighter flat aft pressure bulkhead and a modified wing for low speed drag reduction.

SWISS dedicates its first CS300 to Swiss Romandy

As a testimony to its commitment, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is dedicating its very first Bombardier CS300 to Swiss Romandy and its citizens. A wide-scale two-phase competition was held over a number of months. Firstly, SWISS asked the Swiss Romands: “What does Swiss Romandy mean to you?” The response quote was phenomenal: more than 7,000 people answered with a slogan, a phrase or just a word. Their replies once again demonstrated the diversity and richness of Swiss Romandy. But all the answers had one thing in common: pride in the region, its nature, its inhabitants and their achievements. There was also a second question: “Who is your Swiss Romand hero?” SWISS received many testimonies inspired by very poignant personal stories, sometimes amusing but mostly moving. SWISS then chose 49 of these stories at random and their heroes’ names are each printed on one of the seats of the new aircraft.

The artist: Mathias Forbach, also known as Fichtre

The artist was truly inspired by the competition results. Mathias Forbach, also known as Fichtre, immersed himself in the replies before producing a graphic interpretation of the plethora of ideas put forward on this beautiful region. He says of the project: “Every artist’s goal is to broadcast their art and give it wings … what better way to do that than on an aeroplane!”

A special livery for the first SWISS CS300

“The Swiss Romands’ aeroplane”, the CS300, will wear its new colours for the next 12 months. No less than 300 square metres of special film were printed and carefully applied to the plane in a 36-hour-long process. The aircraft will be based in Geneva and will serve 27 destinations including Palma (in summer), St. Petersburg (in winter) and Dublin (all year round).

SWISS renews its Geneva fleet

The CS300 has 145 seats, 20 more than the CS100. By the end of 2018, the SWISS short-haul fleet in Geneva will consist exclusively of Bombardier C Series. In total, the company plans to add one CS100 and seven CS300s to replace (amongst others) the seven Airbus A320-family aircraft currently stationed at Cointrin airport. SWISS is thus reaffirming its commitment to the Geneva site and Swiss Romandy as a whole.

Ethiopian Airlines places repeat order for 10 A350-900 aircraft

Ethiopian Airlines, the largest airline in Africa, has placed an order for 10 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft, enabling further development of its fast expanding long-haul route network.

Last June, Ethiopian Airlines became the first African carrier to operate the A350 when it took delivery of the first of 12 aircraft in order. Today the carrier operates a fleet of four A350s, two of which are on lease. Today’s order tops-up the Addis Ababa-based carrier’s fleet, enabling it to pursue its growth strategy and objectives over the coming years.

Ethiopian Airlines’ A350-900s are configured in a two class layout seating 30 passengers in Business Class and 313 in Economy Class. The spacious, quiet interior and mood lighting in the cabin contribute to superior levels of passenger comfort and well-being.

“Operating the youngest fleet in the industry with modern and comfortable customer features in the cabin is one of the four pillars in our 15 years strategic road map, vision 2025, and this order placement for additional A350s is one component of this strategy. The performance, operational and cost efficiencies we have achieved with our initial A350-900s have resulted in these additional ten aircraft order placement and thereby suffice our ever-expanding global network. We will deploy the additional aircraft on our long haul routes connecting Addis Ababa with destinations in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia,” explained Tewolde GebreMariam, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines.

To date, Airbus has recorded a total of 851 firm orders for the A350 from 45 customers worldwide, already making it one of the most successful widebody aircraft ever.

Delta orders 10 more A321s

After announcing orders for 30 incremental Airbus A321ceo aircraft just last month, Atlanta, Georgia (U.S.)-based Delta Air Lines has placed an order for 10 more of the aircraft. The agreement was announced today at the Paris Air Show.

Like previous Delta orders for the A321, the 10 aircraft announced today are for the Current Engine Option version of the largest Airbus A320 Family member. The airline took delivery of its first A321 in March of last year. Delta now has ordered a total of 122 A321s, each powered by CFM56 engines from CFM International.

“The A321 is fast becoming a favorite aircraft of our customers and employees alike,” said Greg May, Delta’s Senior Vice President – Supply Chain Management and Fleet. “Its excellent operating economics and customer capacity also make it a great fit for our U.S. domestic network.”

“This order for 10 more A321s from Delta shows yet again the confidence this great airline has in this great aircraft,” said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer – Customers for Airbus Commercial Aircraft. “Passengers, airline crews and investors look to the A320 Family to deliver unsurpassed comfort, economy and reliability. We are most gratified to keep providing Delta with the aircraft platforms on which they can deliver their own, unique brand of ‘service and hospitality from the heart.’”

All of Delta’s A321s feature fuel-saving Sharklets – lightweight composite wingtip devices that offer up to 4 percent fuel-burn savings. This environmental benefit gives airlines the option of extending their range up to 100 nautical miles/185 kilometres or increasing payload capacity by some 1000 pounds/450 kilograms.

Many of Delta’s A321s are being delivered from the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility in Mobile, Alabama. The airline received its first U.S.-manufactured A321 last year. By the end of 2017, the Airbus facility in Mobile is expected to produce four aircraft per month, most going to Airbus’ U.S. customers.

As of the end of May, Delta was flying a fleet of 188 Airbus aircraft, including 146 A320 Family members and 42 A330 widebodies. Later this year, Delta will become the first U.S. airline to operate the new Airbus A350 XWB, or eXtra Wide Body aircraft. Delivery of Delta’s first A350 is slated for this summer.
