Airbus has selected Rockwell Collins as a lead supplier of High-Bandwidth Connectivity (HBC) for the Airbus A320 single-aisle family of aircraft, and long-range A330 and A380 aircraft.

Under the terms of the agreement, airlines purchasing Airbus aircraft can select HBC from Rockwell Collins to meet the growing demand for high-speed connectivity.

“In our day-to-day conversations with our airline customers, the need for high-speed connectivity is top of mind. The solution we’re providing meets the significant pressure airlines are getting from their passengers to provide a superior connectivity service while flying,” said Greg Irmen, vice president and general manager, Flight Controls and Information Systems, Rockwell Collins. “We’re excited to be part of the movement to bring people together around the world, no matter where they may be.”

As a lead supplier, Rockwell Collins will collaborate with Airbus to develop and deploy both a linefit and retrofit HBC system to ensure an end-to-end managed SATCOM solution. Specific details about the technology solution will be released as they are finalized.

Airbus’s HBC selection builds upon Rockwell Collins’ extensive amount of next-generation systems it supplies the aircraft maker. Numerous Rockwell Collins systems are standard on the Airbus A350 XWB and options for the A320 and A330 aircraft families. Most recently, Rockwell Collins was selected by Airbus to supply its Electronic Flight Bag interface and communications unit, which is part of its Secure Server Router portfolio, as options on A320s and A330s.

Air Astana passengers will soon become among the first in the world to experience broadband in-flight connectivity following an agreement recently signed with Rockwell Collins, a leading provider of information management solutions for the aviation industry.

Internet access will be available using personal computers, tablets and smartphones.

Air Astana will install the associated Inmarsat Global Xpress (GX) high speed connectivity system on its fleet of Boeing 767 airliners commencing in September 2016. This will make Air Astana one of the world’s first airlines in the world to go operational with the GX system.

“As a customer oriented airline, Air Astana is always looking to improve the passenger experience on the ground and in the air. We’re very excited about the new in-flight connectivity opportunities that GX reliably provides to Air Astana passengers,” said Andrey Gulev, Commercial Engineer Manager at Air Astana. “After carefully reviewing a number of competing offers, Air Astana’s decision came down to Rockwell Collins’ ability to provide a cost-effective solution that was tailored to meet all our needs.”

“This GX Aviation service opens up new possibilities for Air Astana and its customers,” said Jeff Standerski, senior vice president, Information Management Services (IMS) for Rockwell Collins. “Air Astana’s passengers will soon experience what only a handful of others around the world will—the fastest and most reliable in-flight connectivity available. For Air Astana, this service offers the opportunity to develop new offerings that go far beyond what’s possible today.”

The new service will be available to Business and Economy class passengers on all three of Air Astana’s Boeing 767s. Using their own devices passengers will be able to surf the internet, use various instant messenger applications and check e-mails. First aircraft installation will commence in September 2016 and will be followed by system installation on the other two aircraft in March and September 2017.

Making its premiere at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Lufthansa Technik will introduce an interactive system that lets passengers track their own flight live on their tablet or smartphone. The 3D moving map uses real satellite imagery which allows passengers to select from a variety of customizable perspectives including information on altitude, speed, travel time, etc.

With “niceview Mobile” Lufthansa Technik now can offer a mobile moving map system as part of most Inflight Entertainment Systems (IFE). “niceview Mobile” can run on iOS and Android devices.

“Until now, this level of directly experiencing one’s own flight was only available in the cabins of VIP aircraft in certain specially equipped seats,” explains Andreas Pfister, lead project manager for the Original Equipment Innovation division at Lufthansa Technik. “Now passengers can take the fascination of flying into their own hands. Time after time, it is a very special feeling, even for us developers.”

“niceview Mobile” can be easily integrated in standard inflight entertainment systems and flight guests can access it through the on-board WiFi.

Engineer Andreas Pfister, 46, responsible for “niceview Mobile”, will be at the Lufthansa Technik booth (Hall 6, booth 6B80) at the Aircraft Interiors Expo from April 5 – 7.

This is also an opportunity to give the system an in-depth test on devices provided at the stand.
